The people who built the earthworks seem to have lived in tiny settlements like this, just a house or two surrounded by work areas. Garden plots were kept nearby. Cooking and crafting were done outdoors as much as possible. It seems these homesteads were scattered between earthworks. Recent evidence shows that many houses, perhaps temporary ones for visiting workers, were sometimes set up near earthwork building sites.
