The “Avenue” is a walled passageway that connects the Observatory Circle to the Octagon in the Newark Earthworks complex. The Avenue forms part of the main axis of the Circle and Octagon, built to align with the northernmost rising of the moon every 18.6 years. In this photo, looking from the Circle toward the Octagon, we see one of the oblong gateway mounds which block views into the giant enclosure.
